The narrative of this group begins at the start of the first lockdown in 2020.

The enforced break meant that for the first time in over a decade I had a chance to stop, take a breath and observe. I was aware of the suffering globally, but selfishly I felt enormous relief and calm at this chance to slow down.

This soon gave way to a sense of urgency and anxiety. This path of mixed emotions began to restrict my landscape painting. I felt the need instead to explore a new, empowering energy. I painted with automatism, but early paintings asked more questions than they answered.

I knew I had to focus. An opportunity to do just that arose when I talked to a close friend. Sam is a fisherman, working a small commercial boat out of Cadgwith. He invited me to join him at sea, catching fish with rod and line. Once on board, initial feelings of escapism soon…
