After Rene Magritte
Portrait D'Eluard (s.3541)
Etching, signed by the artist in the stone and numbered in pencil
Published by: Lea Dohman, Antwerp
Reference: Barbara Stoeltie. "After Magritte, The World
of Interiors", London April
1986, pp 142-9
Note: Two pieces similar to this one were sold in the Sothebys
sale, 2nd July 1987, "The remaining contents of the studio
of Rene Magritte". This piece was
made after the portrait drawing by Paul Eluard made by Magritte
in 1936 "La Magie Blanche". An illustration from the
catalogue is available which shows
the piece. It was therefore approved by the artist himself who
no doubt was involved in the proofing and making of the piece.
Although not in the Kaplan catalogue it is obviously an important
part of the printing oeuvre of this artist. An evocative and
slightly alarming piece.
