Kerry Harding

Kerry Harding’s paintings offer a refreshing take on the Cornish landscape … a ‘poetic essence’. The paintings demonstrate an astuteness and exploration of the subtle shades and textures of grey that characterise this region: be it the granite structures or the blue seas and grassy verges muted by overcast clouds.

Although the work is undoubtedly informed by the Cornish landscape in terms of its pallet and surface, it is equally concerned with the paint itself, its application and its role as a visual language. Compositions develop through the discoveries made within the continuous process of application of paint and then sanding it back. The work is often divided into panels to highlight the contrasting textures and properties of the paint itself. Distinctive motifs are used to focus the work and add depth.

Harding’s restricted palette pares down colour to a minimal distraction in order to attend to the mark making. Having said this, her attitude to colour is not merely black and white. Rather, Harding deploys a subtle and confident mastery of colour in the work. When colour is introduced, it enhances, highlights and comments on the activity and space created in each piece.

Gareth Edwards

Play and interplay pervade in this new body of work by Gareth Edwards: here paintings are perceived as material objects and three-dimensional work is brought to the surface. Perhaps better known for his own “matter paintings”, Edward’s show consists primarily of about fifteen sculptural pieces, in a range of materials including: plaster, metal, clay, wood and slate.

The work is a series of responses and replies. One of the inspirations has come from Edward’s response to the studios of Brancusi and more locally, Barbara Hepworth, where the materials laid out pulled down the light to make meaning of it with their presence. The title piece of Edward’s show takes Brancusi’s famed plinths as the basis for a monumental plaster form rising from the floor and “drawing in the light”.
Drawing In The Light, is an ‘installation’ whereby the reading of each piece is enhanced by its relation to the room and the other objects in it. There is a playful humour to the work, which operates through titles juxtaposed with form. For example, “Hug” – a bulky, organic plaster form that slouches towards the floor as it hovers just inches above the ground works to conjure up a cosy feeling of embrace.

The notion of embrace is repeated throughout many pieces in the show with titles such as “Marriage”, “Hold” and “softening of tongue dreaming” – all alluding to an intimacy experienced while encountering the materials.

“Field of Stones” is a large painting that echoes and gestures towards the sculptural pieces. It is one of a select few paintings included in the show that give an insight into the larger artistic practice of Gareth Edwards while simultaneously working within the space to provide another entry point into the matter at hand.
