"Colour, mood and simplification are important in my work. Painting is never easy, nor should it be."

Ronald F. Smith, RGI

Ronald F. Smith, RGI has been exhibiting with the Lemon Street Gallery since it opened, in 1999, and we are delighted to present an exhibition of his recent paintings in our forthcoming March schedule.

Smith is a Scottish painter and member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts since receiving the David Cargill Award in 1997. He attended the Glasgow School of Art from 1966-1969, and has exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom during his impressive career of painting for over 30 years. Smith's work is included in such public collections as the Leeds Education Authority, Glasgow City Council, Northern Lanarkshire Council, Flemmings and Adam & Co.. His work is also held in private collections in the UK , Holland , New Zealand , Canada and the USA .

Ronald Smith's early retirement from his post as Principal Teacher of Art and Design, Bellshill Academy (1979-2002) coincided with the acceptance of a commission from Cunard for paintings and prints for their new liner, QM2. Now completed, Smith has continued to produce paintings based on landscapes and seascapes of the Highlands of Scotland and the Mediterranean.

His recent painting trip to Cornwall was a contrast to the wilderness of Sunderland . Smith says that he likes the differences of mood, light and colour between Cornwall , Scotland and the Mediterranean . Smith's work is always based on places observed. His many influences include the paintings of Diebenkorn (1922-1993), Matisse (1869-1954) and Staël (1914-1955) - all of whom in their own way explore the boundary lines between representation and abstraction; colour and geometric form; and the medium of 'paint' itself.

Smith's forthcoming exhibition will fill two floors of the Lemon Street Gallery with his remarkable paintings. Admirers, collectors and "new comers" to Smith's work are all invited to come enjoy the richness of his colourful palate, scenic paintings and experience of natural world in painterly terms.
