Tim Shaw is an Irish Sculptor who has chosen to live and work in Cornwall. Notions generated by the land of Cornwall itself, its ancient aspect its strangeness, otherness and what Shaw himself describes as its timelessness have powerfully influenced his work. Shaw has a metaphysical cast of mind and has been influenced also by the cinema including the work of Bergman and Tarkovsky. At the same time the world of modern technology has been a grist to his mill. He also studied 19th Century French Sculptors and medieval cathedrals.
"When I began sculpting my aim was to model realism. For inspiration I looked to the great master Rodin, the sensual works of Despiau, Rosso and to the ultimate harmonious balanced forms that Greek sculptors provided. More recently cathedrals have interested me. It is the music of life in all its entire, rich and varied strangeness that has given me endless inspiration." |
