"I have colour, a canvas and I must express myself with purity, even though I do it in the briefest manner by putting down for instance, four or five spots of colour or by drawing four or five lines which have plastic expression"
Matisse, Notes of a Painter

The ordering of the artist's sensations before nature is a highly complex and unpredictable process, involving both intuitive response and skilful facility. The artist needs to acquire through long and patient practice, a distinctively personal and deeply subjective language of painting which will also be capable of expressing the appearance and the effect that "nature" has on all our human thoughts and sensibilities. Modern paintings are no longer mere "windows onto the world" but are a synthetic system of visual ----that are as much involved with tactile stimulation, spacial absorption and evocative memories, as empirical observations.

Much of this is due to the way the masters of modern painting, and Glen Scouller surely belongs to this group, do not present us with a fixed and stable view of the world, which would have a deadening effect on our response. On the contrary, looking at Scouller's paintings our eyes are constantly encouraged and enticed to move, both through the subtly arranged spacial construction of his pictorial scenes and at the same time across the richly decorated surfaces of his vividly coloured pictures. Thus the central theme of movement and travel in Scouller's work is not only related to his actual subject matter which the artist discovers during his constant journeying across the globe, but more essentially within the vibrant vitality of the paintings themselves, which ingeniously play off tangible and intangible space, three and two dimensionally, description and synthesis. Ultimately it is this synthesis that is crucial. The artist achieves this through an intense process of visual intellectual and emotional distillation so that the paintings of Scouller become like those of the Master of Nice "an art of balance, of purity and serenity" Stability and serenity are of course two very different things -- one is imposed, the other is achieved. Despite their appearance of easy simplicity Glen Scouller's paintings are a great achievement.
